Clinical Fellowship for Doctors

The Clinical Fellowship Programme has been developed in partnership with The University of Wolverhampton, School of Medicine and Clinical Practice (SMCP).

These posts would suit doctors from the UK or abroad that may be at various stages of their career and would include:

  1. Clinical Fellow
    Doctors who have completed their basic medical degree (MBBS) and the Foundation Programme, or 2 – 3 years of overseas clinical experience post-qualification / post registration (junior resident).
  2. Senior Clinical Fellow
    Doctors who have completed a recognised post-graduate qualification and are seeking further specialization or qualification or both (more senior resident).
  3. Advanced Clinical Fellow (Pre CCT)
    Doctors who have attained specialist status in any of the medical specialties and seek further specific experience and research opportunities (established practitioner).

Who can apply

These posts will be tailored to suit doctors at several stages of their career including:

  • Post Foundation and Core Medical Trainees seeking next step experience
  • Specialist Trainees seeking out of programme experience, attainment of specific expertise, credentialing in a subspecialty and project or research opportunities Overseas doctors seeking UK NHS experience
  • Doctors seeking to enhance their portfolio to gain entry to the training grades
  • Doctors who seek to progress to Consultant grade by applying for the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
  • Doctors already in non-training grade positions e.g. SAS doctors or Trust Fellows who are seeking a formal educational structure to their posts and wish to pursue higher qualifications built in to the these posts

There will be direct Consultant supervision and an educational programme including annual appraisal, 4-monthly supervisor meetings, access to an e-portfolio, study leave and a study leave budget.

There will be a specific programme of protected teaching and a wide range of other clinical training activities including Core Curriculum Teaching, PACES teaching, a weekly grand round and departmental specific meetings. Post holders will be encouraged to undertake audit, quality improvement projects, to pursue Membership examinations in their chosen specialty and opportunities in medical education or research.

Job Description

The post holder will be working with a team of Consultants, Specialist Trainees, Clinical Fellows, Core Trainees and Foundation Year Trainees. Each post has a generic clinical component in their clinical specialty. In addition the post holder will have an agreed experience in the specialty of their choice including outpatient clinics, ward cover, specialist in-patient reviews and procedures, audit and research. The precise role within each team and the proportion of clinical time spent between the two components would depend on previous experience and qualifications of the candidate and the specialty chosen.
